Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that causes weakness in the eyeballs and eyelids and progresses to the head, neck, limb, and respiratory muscles.

Communication impairment between nerve cells and muscles prevents muscle contractions from occurring, resulting in muscle weakness.

A newer IV treatment with monoclonal antibodies, Soliris (eculizumab), has become the first antibody-based complement inhibitor approved in the U.S., Europe, and Japan to treat adults suffering from generalized MG.

I mean, I guess you’re never quite prepared to take an Uber by yourself to the emergency room 2 weeks after moving to New York City and starting grad school at Juilliard, but then again, 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞. ⁣

Though my autoimmune journey truly began when this sad, scared selfie was snapped (alliteration is one of my fav things, FYI), it would take over two more years for me to be properly diagnosed, begin the right treatments, and start figuring out exactly what it means to live life as a chronically ill person. ⁣
•⁣
I wish I could go back and tell the girl in this photo that it would all work out okay. That it won’t be easy, and that there will be a lot more stumbles and falls before the road starts to flatten out, but I like to think she needed to figure it out on her own. ⁣
•⁣
I still have so much to learn about what this world is and what my place in it might be, and frankly I think that’s one of the beautiful parts of life - our roles are constantly changing, and we’re forced to adapt to new people, new environments, and new situations. Of course I hope that I’m never in a situation like this again, but if I ever am, I know that I will get through it and come out the other side a stronger person."
